Candidates selected as Statistical Investigator are posted as Junior Statistical Officers of Grade B in Subordinate Statistical Service under the Ministry of Statistical and Programme Implementation. Most of the successful candidates are posted in National Sample Survey Office and only few of them are posted at different Ministries or Departments under Union Government.

The Statistical Investigator in National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) has to perform following functions:

1. Data Collection where he is assigned an exhaustive field job primarily to conduct surveys and data collection. It is given for various drives initiated through government schemes, programs, urban surveys, etc. It is supervised and controlled by Field Operations Division.

2. Data Processing officers are posted in NSSO’s non-FOD positions to conduct desk jobs and prepare general data reports for the different Governmental Ministries/ Departments/ Organization. The data collected by them gives general estimates and parameters to formulate different government policies, schemes and programmes of the Government of India.

Candidate who are posted in different government ministries, departments and organizations are assigned clerical profile where they draft documents, prepare survey report, data entry, tabulation, editing and collecting latest data for reports, etc.

Those who are appointed under Subordinate Statistical Service ( SSS) which is a doorway to junior officer promotions. Future promotions are based on the seniority and relevant experience of five to six years to become Senior Statistical Officer (Group B - Gazetted).
